Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Gymnastics

This half term we have looked at different balances in Gymnastics. We have learnt about the difference between a symmetrical balance and an asymmetrical balance.

Symmetrical = The same on both sides
Asymmetrical = Different on both sides

We have used the apparatus to create symmetrical balances on our own and in a pair. Here are some of the pictures from our final lesson where we worked in a pair to make a symmetrical balance.

Our Quest for a good story!

Year 3 are working towards writing a quest myth in English. They have been thinking about what objects might be in the story and what special properties they might posses. 3H came up with lots of possible objects and then worked in teams to come up with imaginative ideas that will add interest to their stories.

A magical globe which was a fire ball. A cloak that would never leave you. Magic glitter that turns people to stone! A stick which is also a wand. A magical bag from which a genie appears or a sword that glitters when in a heroes hands.

Here are some groups sharing their ideas.

Dragons Den

On Tuesday 13th Jan 09 year 3 were delivered top secret letters. The letters asked us to go on a quest to find clues. We had to look for clues in the hall to work out what the mystery was.

We found an egg, bones, footprints, claws, scales and a big green eye.

After looking at all the clues we decided that we must be in a dragons den.

This mystery was the beginning of our new integrated learning unit 'Dragons Den' which will link literacy, ICT and DT.

We will use our literacy work on myths and legends to create dragon myths for Year 1 pupils.

Cup Med Football

On Monday 12th Jan 09, 3RM had a special lesson of football and fitness skills. We worked really hard trying out all the activities for a minute and a half each. Some of the exercises were harder than others and needed extra perseverance.
The activity above worked our tricep muscles and was one of the hardest activities.
We not only got lots of exercise but we had fun doing the activities to music. We even decided that most of the exercises we did could be done in our own homes and would help us to get our 30 minutes of exercise a day.A big thank you to Cup Med for the wonderful lesson and Mrs Branscombe for organising it.

Open evening

Well done kids. Your parents were all very impressed by your hard work so far in Year 3. Did you get your parents doing some Activate? They particularly enjoyed watching the videos of your volcano dances.

Volcanic activity in 3H

We have now completed our Integrated unit ' Eruption Construction'. We made model volcanoes in art lessons and designed different ways to make them erupt in Design Technology. In Dance we created group dances showing the different states of the volcano erupting and the larva spreading and engulfing the land surrounding it. We even made up our own musical accompaniment using percussion instruments and performed this whilst another group danced. Here are some of our volcanoes erupting.

Eruption Construction

Our integrated learning unit this half term has been 'Eruption Construction' which linked Science and Art. We have all made our own volcano using paper mache. We then used coloured paper to collage the detail. Finally we made our volcanoes erupt. We used paper, tubing and sticks to make it look like lava bursting out the tops of our volcanoes.

3RM carefully gluing coloured paper onto their volcanoes.

Some finished volcanoes with their own eruptions.

Blue Friday

Blue Friday ended our Anti-Bullying Week today. The children showed their support for the cause by coming to school in blue. In a final assembly today, every class shared what they had learnt about bullying throughout the week. The children left with the important message to TELL someone if ever they feel that they or someone else might be a victim of bullying.

Anti-Bullying Week

As part of Anti-Bullying week year 3 have looked at a painting by the artist Lowry called 'The Fight' We talked about who the victim was in the painting and how they might be feeling. We used drama to act out the scene. The children took on the role of the onlookers and thought about how they would feel if they saw this happening. We talked about how a persons' emotions can be seen in their face and we used this idea to create masks that would show how the onlookers at the fight might be feeling. We're going to share our masks with the school in our Blue Friday assembly.

Luke: My onlooker is upset because they don't like bullies and they don't think it's nice.
Amy: My onlooker feels petrified because she doesn't know what will happen.
Dima: My onlooker is feeling sad because he doesn't want to get involved if he says stop.
